As most management gurus teach, a high performing team is one in which the members align with the values of the organization. Some universally accepted values in a quality dental team are Teamwork, Respect, Exceptional dentistry and Continuous improvement.
However, just working within these values will not sustain and grow such a team.
An important aspect that is often overlooked is the creation of a successful culture that affords the team an opportunity to feel engaged in a bigger game. High performing team members need to be challenged to be socially responsible and make a positive difference in the lives of others by giving back.
When your organization creates such a culture of serving the community locally and globally, you will be amazed at the great camaraderie and synergy that transpires. You will gain the respect of your fellow professionals and attract more winning team members. Learn how to create such a successful culture while delivering values-based and socially-conscious dentistry.
Having decided at an early age that he wanted to follow his father’s footsteps into a career in dentistry, Jan wasted no time in achieving this goal. Right out of high school, he completed the 5-year dental program at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, where he graduated with his doctorate in 2002 at the age of 22. Upon graduation he was admitted into the OKU (Omega Kappa Upsilon) Fraternity for the top 10% of the graduating class. Upon graduating from dental school, Jan joined his father’s family dental practice and was mentored on how to build and nurture caring relationships. He took the lead in converting the practice to be totally digital and paperless in 2003. It is this ethos of hard work, integrity and giving back to his patients, staff and the community, that has led Jan to develop the TREC Dental Partnership that operates 15 dental clinics in the Calgary area. All the TREC Clinics have a reputation for being beautifully designed and well-operated leading edge facilities. Jan has always been an early innovation adopter right from being the first Canadian dentist to import the new Sirona Teneo treatment centre and Galileos (3D CBCT). He has also established a digital dental laboratory to be able to support the digital platform of the clinics. All of Jan’s partners at these clinics share his passion for social consciousness and they are all actively involved in giving back to the community. In 2018, TREC Dental partnered with CUPS to operate a free dental clinic in Calgary providing care to some of Calgary’s neediest citizens. Jan regularly volunteers with Kindness in Action, Dentistry For All and the Alex Bus. He has been on eleven overseas dental missions to perform dentistry in remote communities in Guatemala, Peru, Tibet, Morocco and Ecuador. Jan is also very active in his local community. He is currently the Chair of the World Partnership Walk Calgary. He is also passionate about health and fitness. He absolutely loves Crossfit and is the co-owner of TREC Fit Lab, a gym in NW Calgary that helps others get fit and healthy. Jan has been invited to speak at national meetings on practice management and team empowerment and is currently a lecturer with Straumann Dental in the field of restorative implant dentistry.

As emerging dental groups scale, Founders face a wide array of choices when it comes to raising capital for their future growth and a lot of difficult questions about the future: Will they go it alone with bank debt or take on a partner? What does it mean for the organization and Founder to bring on a private equity investor compared to a strategic partner? How does the design and implementation of their operational model affect this choice? Where does culture fit in? What is it that investors and strategics are really looking for in emerging groups? What steps can an emerging group take to improve its value today, find a partner that aligns with its vision and prepare for a ‘second bite’ in the future?
Having been a healthcare private equity investor, founding executive with multiple private equity backed start-ups and now leading M&A for a National DSO, Patrick will address these questions and give practical suggestions to help emerging groups understand their options and evaluate when and if a Strategic or financial partner is right for their business.
Stephen E. Thorne, IV, B.A., M.H.A., is CEO and Founder of Pacific Dental Services® (PDS®), a leading dental support organization (DSO) established in 1994 and headquartered in Irvine, California. PDS currently provides business support services to over 700 dental practices throughout 20 states. PDS, which will celebrate 25 years of service in 2019, has landed on the prestigious Inc. 5000 list 13 times.
Mr. Thorne began his work in the dental field in 1989 when his father, a dentist, offered him a job managing a struggling dental office. That first office became a big success, and Mr. Thorne continued to work with his father for several years before venturing out on his own and creating PDS.
The company is dedicated to the success of dentists. Their mission is to provide the best choice for practicing dentists through their development of efficient dental practices, dedication to effective management services, and a commitment to maximizing individual and professional God-given potential. Another core value of PDS is service, illustrated through the Pacific Dental Services Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization that provides service programs for oral healthcare locally, nationally, and internationally.
Mr. Thorne’s leadership and influence extend beyond PDS to the wider dental industry. He was instrumental in forming the Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO) which represents some of the largest DSOs in the world; he served as the founding President for the first three years. He is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board for Harvard School of Dental Medicine where he helps drive their ambitious agenda to integrate oral health and medicine. Mr. Thorne also sits on the board of the Strategic Advisory Council, part of the Santa Fe Group comprised of trusted dental scholars and professionals. The Council is focused on expanding oral healthcare access to aging Americans. He recently joined the Dean's Advisory Board at A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health.
Mr. Thorne graduated from the University of California Los Angeles in 1989 with a major in Economics-Business. In 1994 he earned his Master’s Degree in Health Administration from Chapman University. In 2016 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from A.T. Still University, the world’s first osteopathic medical school. Dr. Scott Kalniz is the CEO and Chief Dental Officer of Elite Dental Partners. Dr. Kalniz has over twenty years of experience in key leadership roles within dental organizations. He also currently serves on the board of several PE backed healthcare companies.
After graduating from The Ohio State University with a BS/BA in economics, he continued his post-graduate studies at Ohio State and graduated from the College of Dentistry with a D.D.S. in 1998.
He then joined his father’s practice, Corner Dental, and grew it to a 6-location multi-specialty group while practicing dentistry full time.
After a successful transaction with a regional DSO, Dr. Kalniz continued with the group in several strategic roles. In 2014, Dr. Kalniz and several other dental executives founded Elite Dental Partners (EDP), a rapidly growing DSO headquartered in Chicago supporting over 100 affiliated offices in 13 states throughout the Midwest. EDP provides customized non-clinical support services to over 175 dentists and 1000 team members, allowing them to focus on providing outstanding care for their patients. Quality patient care is at the forefront of everything done at EDP, and EDP is seeking partners who always put their patient’s needs first.
Dr. Kalniz will share his insights into growing Elite Dental Partners into a group with over 100 offices and 190 dentists. Going from 0-100 in a short period of time takes an outstanding team running a great process. Having a solid mission and vision lights the way for sustained growth. Your team needs to believe in what it is you are trying to do. If you are looking to grow your DSO, you must focus on building a solid foundation for that growth. It needs to be strategically planned and you must build a solid playbook. Little issues in a small organization are highlighted and multiplied in a large one.
This Program provides an in-depth look at why and how to develop an effective Chief Clinical Officer role within your organization. It's time to step outside of the compliance box when designing this role. This program will provide valuable tools to help you design and implement a modern clinical department for radical success.

In this lecture, Mark Hillebrandt and Abe Kasbo will take a deep dive into digital marketing. What is digital marketing and how can it benefit a DSO? How is it possible that a google search for a dentist can lead to an ad for a local dental practice appearing on another random website a week later?
Mark will kick things off with how digital marketing works, how prospective patients / customers are targeted online using various methodologies, search engine optimization techniques, and his personal experience with how digital marketing has transformed marketing in general.
Abe will lecture during the latter portion of the seminar and dive into what options are available for DSO’s in terms of digital marketing & advertising, and where to start. Abe will also show sample DSO budgets for marketing and individual campaigns.

Your dental hygiene team provides more to your dental group than the 6 month hygiene appointment. With the dental hygienists spending more time with your patients than any other person in your practice, they hold the key to building value, increasing patient retention and improving your revenue.
Discover how your dental hygiene team can:
With multiple providers and multiple locations it is important that you have a strong process for how you treat, communicate and retain your patient base. It is equally important you have a process for you how onboard, train, mentor, engage and hold your hygiene team accountable.
In this course we will outline how to design a dental hygiene program within your dental group/DSO that will support growth, engagement and retention.
If your team members are inching toward small goals using careful, proven methods, you’re stuck yards behind and need a huge mindset shift to leap ahead. This program will teach you to identify the things holding you back and adopt a new way of reaching your goals.
Dynamic teams can produce dramatically better results than individuals – but it’s easy to get frustrated if everyone is working out of sync. Improving team culture will re-energize and empower every member.

Discovering their weaknesses and highlighting their strengths pulled them through the toughest tasks.
Using real-life examples from the construction site with her kids, a team ranging from seventeen to two years old, Cara challenges audiences to take advantage of the wide range of skills and temperaments of a diverse team.
This program helps teams overcome challenges and think more creatively about processes outside their everyday tasks in order to set larger goals and imagine innovative ways to achieve them.

• Understand the value of big goals
• Discover the power of a varied team
• Stay confident through challenges

Cara’s keynote presentations combine strong content with entertainment to help audiences around the world build a better life and career. She proves that reaching your highest potential isn’t just about how hard you work but about adjusting your mindset and strategy to take full advantage of the hours you’re putting in. Your vision, mindset, and focus become the building blocks for your success.
As practice leaders, we tend to rely on our limited understanding of our teams and their ever changing dynamics. Daily management distractions, crises, emergencies and daily tasks begin to outweigh creativity, team development and ultimately patient care all of which also lead to poor retention and poor performance.
