Stephen E. Thorne, IV, B.A., M.H.A., is CEO and Founder of Pacific Dental Services® (PDS®), a leading dental support organization (DSO) established in 1994 and headquartered in Irvine, California. PDS currently provides business support services to over 700 dental practices throughout 20 states. PDS, which will celebrate 25 years of service in 2019, has landed on the prestigious Inc. 5000 list 13 times.
Mr. Thorne began his work in the dental field in 1989 when his father, a dentist, offered him a job managing a struggling dental office. That first office became a big success, and Mr. Thorne continued to work with his father for several years before venturing out on his own and creating PDS.

Mr. Thorne graduated from the University of California Los Angeles in 1989 with a major in Economics-Business. In 1994 he earned his Master’s Degree in Health Administration from Chapman University. In 2016 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from A.T. Still University, the world’s first osteopathic medical school. Mr. Thorne resides in Nevada with his wife Pam of 28 years; they have seven children.
Dr. Scott Kalniz is the CEO and Chief Dental Officer of Elite Dental Partners. Dr. Kalniz has over twenty years of experience in key leadership roles within dental organizations. He also currently serves on the board of several PE backed healthcare companies.
After graduating from The Ohio State University with a BS/BA in economics, he continued his post-graduate studies at Ohio State and graduated from the College of Dentistry with a D.D.S. in 1998.
He then joined his father’s practice, Corner Dental, and grew it to a 6-location multi-specialty group while practicing dentistry full time.
After a successful transaction with a regional DSO, Dr. Kalniz continued with the group in several strategic roles. In 2014, Dr. Kalniz and several other dental executives founded Elite Dental Partners (EDP), a rapidly growing DSO headquartered in Chicago supporting over 100 affiliated offices in 13 states throughout the Midwest. EDP provides customized non-clinical support services to over 175 dentists and 1000 team members, allowing them to focus on providing outstanding care for their patients. Dr. Roark brings over 18 years of private practice, non-profit, and DSO experience to DentalOne Partners, Inc. In addition to owning a successful private practice in Nantucket, Massachusetts, she served as Clinical Officer at a major DSO and was formerly the Director of General Dentistry and Associate Professor at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Dr. Roark received a Master of Science in Health Care Management degree from Harvard University and earned her dental degree Magna Cum Laude from the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine at Boston University. In this lecture, Mark Hillebrandt and Abe Kasbo will take a deep dive into digital marketing. What is digital marketing and how can it benefit a DSO? How is it possible that a google search for a dentist can lead to an ad for a local dental practice appearing on another random website a week later?
Mark will kick things off with how digital marketing works, how prospective patients / customers are targeted online using various methodologies, search engine optimization techniques, and his personal experience with how digital marketing has transformed marketing in general.
Abe will lecture during the latter portion of the seminar and dive into what options are available for DSO’s in terms of digital marketing & advertising, and where to start. Abe will also show sample DSO budgets for marketing and individual campaigns.
Brian A. Colao has a nationwide practice that focuses on all facets of complex commercial litigation, including contractual disputes, franchise disputes, issues of corporate governance, breach of fiduciary duty, theft of trade secrets, unfair competition, covenants not to compete, patent, trademark and copyright infringement, fraud and deceptive trade practices, disparagement, lender liability and other business claims. Mr. Colao is the Director of Dykema’s Dental Service Organizations Industry Group and advises clients in the health care industry on numerous federal and state regulatory issues including fraud and abuse, HIPAA, corporate practice of medicine and dentistry, fee splitting, credentialing, advertising and billing issues.
Over the last several years, Mr. Colao has served as lead trial counsel in many significant commercial disputes pending in more than 25 different federal districts in over 20 states. He has appeared as lead counsel in numerous state court cases pending in at least 10 states and three Canadian provinces. He has also represented clients in domestic and international arbitration proceedings pending in New York, London, Zurich, Costa Rica, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Orlando, New Orleans, Miami and Jacksonville. Over the course of his career, Mr. Colao has tried in excess of 50 cases to judgment including jury trials, bench trials, and domestic and international arbitration proceedings.

Heidi Arndt RDH, BSDH has been working in the dental field for over 18 years.
Her experience stretches from working as a treatment coordinator, dental
assistant, and practice manager before graduating from the University of
Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene.
Heidi spent the early part of her career working in private practice and at the
Mayo Clinic (Department of Dental Specialties). In 2002, Heidi began working
for American Dental Partners, where she was a dental hygiene mentor/coach
and was later promoted to Director, Dental Hygiene Development. Heidi
managed over $140 million in annual revenue, and led all dental hygiene
development activities for American Dental Partners affiliated dental groups
(more than 250 practices and 1000 dental hygienists across the entire United

Patrick Costello is the Director of Business Development for Smile Brands
Inc and OneSmile LLC, where he leads new practice partnerships for the
West Region. Patrick brings 12+ years of experience in mergers,
acquisitions and capital raising within the health care services industry.
In March 2016, Patrick joined with Steve Bilt (CEO, Smile Brands) and
Brad Schmidt (CFO, Smile Brands) to lead acquisitions for their newly
formed DSO venture, OneSmile LLC. Later in 2016, OneSmile LLC
successfully acquired Smile Brands Inc. and Patrick continued on to lead acquisitions for the combined
Prior to Smile Brands, he was a Senior Consultant for the Private Equity Value Creation group at Ernst &
Young (EY). At EY, Patrick consulted with public and private companies to improve their operations
following transformative events such as mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining EY, Patrick partnered
with Dr. Barry Karlin (founder of CRC Health Group, formerly a Bain Capital Company) and two other
former CRC Health Group executives to found Prospira PainCare, a private equity-backed healthcare
services company. Prospira PainCare provides integrated, multi-specialty pain management services for
acute, chronic or intractable pain though a network of world-class providers in five states. At Prospira,
Patrick led the acquisitions of four multi-site regional platforms and three follow-on acquisitions which
generated net revenues of over $55 million. Post-acquisition, Patrick collaborated with physician leaders
to accelerate the growth of the acquired practices through the development of de novo locations and the
introduction additional services for their existing patients.
Prior to joining Prospira PainCare, Patrick was a Senior Associate at Gryphon Investors, a San Francisco
based private equity group with over $1 billion of committed equity capital, where he was responsible for
executing and monitoring investments in the healthcare services industry, focusing on sectors such as
physical therapy, dental services, addictions treatment, clinical research and healthcare information
technology. Before joining Gryphon Investors, Patrick was an analyst in the Healthcare Group of Piper
Jaffray, a Minneapolis based investment bank, where he executed buy and sell-side M&A assignments,

Mark Hillebrandt joined Henry Schein in March 2018 and serves as the Vice President of Marketing for the North America Dental Group. He has over 10 years of dental industry experience along with expertise in transforming how customers buy products through both digital marketing and e-commerce. Most recently, Mark was the Business Leader for the Professional Dental, Medical and Scientific product categories at Amazon, where he led Amazon’s growth of professional healthcare supplies to private practice doctors and group practices. Prior to this, Mark held several leadership roles within KaVo-Kerr, with his most recent being Vice President and General Manager of the CAD/CAM business unit. Additionally, he served as Vice President of Marketing and Product Development at the Ormco orthodontic businesses as they transitioned focus from traditional braces to digital products. Previous to that he spent several years within the KaVo-Kerr Imaging business, where he supported a variety of digital imaging products in addition to leading the i-CAT 3D x-ray business. Mark holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California Riverside and an MBA from the University of Southern California.

In 2015, Mr. Kasbo was recognized as Economic Bridge Builder of Year by the Governor and Legislative Branch of the State of Michigan – Wayne County in Michigan also bestowed the same honor. He is the founder of OnlyOneToothBrush.com – a philanthropic effort aimed to bring 200,000 toothbrushes to support the oral health of Syrian refugees in Germany, Canada, and the United States.

Julie Rice is an entrepreneur best known for co-founding the fitness phenomenon, SoulCycle. Rice served as Co-CEO at SoulCycle from 2006 to 2015 before becoming the Chief Brand Officer at WeWork in November 2017.
Rice and her partner Elizabeth Cutler started SoulCycle in 2006 in the rear lobby of an Upper West Side dance studio found on Craigslist. As founders, CEO's and Chief Creative Officers, they grew the company to 60 studios. Cutler and Rice were honored as one of Goldman Sachs’ 100 Builders + Innovators in 2013 and 2014 and were voted one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business. In 2015, Cutler and Rice were honored as two of AdWeek’s Brand Geniuses.
Rice's life's work has been about building community and she brings that focus to her new role at WeWork. At WeWork, Rice is approaching everything through the lens of community – she is focusing on WeWork's brand and the experience WeWork provides its members, and seeking new and innovative ways to grow and share the WeWork experience around the globe.
Prior to opening SoulCycle, Rice worked in the entertainment business, discovering and developing talent for companies like Handprint Entertainment in Los Angeles, where she lived for nine years. A graduate of the State University of New York at Binghamton, Rice majored in English and Theater. Rice lives in NYC with her husband, Spencer, and their two daughters, Phoebe and Parker.
